A detector like GPTZero is built to answer a reviewer's question: does this document look machine-generated? That's a different question from a writer's: which part of my draft caused this, and what do I change? A single document-level percentage doesn't distinguish between one formulaic paragraph and a whole essay written in a predictable register — both can return a similar score.
This is exactly where false positives hurt the most. Formal academic writing, non-native English phrasing, and heavily edited prose all tend to read as more "predictable" to a detector, regardless of who wrote it. If the response to a flag is to guess at edits and re-run the whole document through a detector again, that's slow and it isn't grounded in what actually triggered the score.
